5-1 & 5-2 2019-2020 Grade 5

5-1 and 5-2 have been reading their book club books, and are welcome to begin their project at home. A letter has been sent home, and it includes the five project options students can pick from. They are to pick only ONE project to complete. On Friday March 6, we will bring our books and completed projects to share with the class in a cafe style atmosphere. The five project options are:   ·  Artifact Basket – Collect 8-10 items that represent a significant event, character, or conflict.  Each item must have a one-sentence explanation. ·  Drawing and caption – Create a six-frame comic strip with one caption and two dialogue bubbles each. ·  Write two letters – The first letter will be a letter from you asking the main character a thought provoking question. The second letter will be from that character replying to you, taking on their persona. ·  Draw - Make an advertisement on large card stock to “sell” this book, be sure to be convincing....

Greetings Friends It's been a cold week, and we have officially come to the end of indoor recess! This week in HUMS we continue our explorations about the 6 Canadian regions, with the topic of creativity. We learned about haiku poems, colour poems, and short stories. We also considered the physical landscape of our regions through an artistic lens.  At home, you can talk about the Japanese Haiku, which consists of three lines. The lines have:       5 syllables        7 syllables        5 syllables Example:         A flower blossoms                    Against the rage of winter                         Promising new hope You might also like to talk about the difference between a simile and a metaphor. Math:   Students have explored the following methods for two digit by two digit multiplication: Array Partial Product Box Metho d Lattice Traditional Students can practice and review the various methods. We will continue using our fact families and multiplication as we further explore area, perimeter and measurement. Math quiz Monday, January 20th. Science We continue to explore weather including cloud types, instruments used and weather fronts. Students are practicing their note-taking skills after reviewing weather wiz kids. The information gathered will help them complete their weather meteorologist assignment (details, slides and links are shared in Drive). Science Quiz Jan 23 includes wetlands and weather topics.  Students should understand key terms as listed on the Blog pages and in the assignment for wetland writing.

What an exciting first half of the year! We had an amazing week getting into the holiday spirit. From making sock snowmen (thank you to ALL families for bringing materials), to a scavenger hunt, and Hot Chocolate Day! We also enjoyed seeing some students from our grade 5 family performing at the TMC's Got Talent Show. We certainly have a wonderful school community and culture. Thank you so much for the warm wishes and for spoiling your teachers, we truly appreciate all the love. We hope you have a warm and peaceful winter break, if you're going away or staying close by. We wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our families and students! The year has been full of adventures so far and we are grateful for the support you provide! Transitioning to TMC and middle school introduces our students to many firsts. We wish everyone a peaceful break with family and look forward to the New Year. Here is a glimpse of our week so far as we finish up wetlands, create snowmen, & write stories involving our new characters! In math, we are still focused on multiplication. We rolled 4 dice to develop equations which we used to create the dimensions of our rectangles. We raced our opponent in covering the field! For tomorrow, remember your cup for hot chocolate! Thursday students will clean out lockers so be sure to empty backpacks in case there are any unpleasant surprises stashed away!

We would like to organize a winter snowman craft to do together with both classes next week! We will be making sock snowmen. Each student can make 1 or 2 snowmen, depending how much material they bring. If you could please send your child to school next Monday with these materials, it would truly help with our mission! ·       1 or 2 WHITE ATHLETIC sock(s) ·       1 or 2 DECORATIVE/COLOURED sock(s) ·       2 cups (for 1 snowman) OR 4 cups (for 2 snowmen) of rice  ·       Decorative art supplies (optional) ·       Ribbon or string (optional) We will provide some art supplies, but it definitely helps having extra for everyone. Students will have the option to keep their snowmen or give it as a gift to a friend or family member.

Thank you to all of the families that came for Student Led Conferences. We really appreciate you for your time and the discussions around your child's success and growth. We really value these opportunities because it puts us all on the same page, providing kiddos with every avenue to success! In Humanities, we began our Big Task in Humanities. Part One focuses on 5 important categories. Students were given these instructions:  What do I need to do? I need to look up the topics of my region using online resources and print materials I need to take notes on the information I find What should I have?
