It's been a cold one!
Greetings Friends
It's been a cold week, and we have officially come to the end of indoor recess! This week in HUMS we continue our explorations about the 6 Canadian regions, with the topic of creativity. We learned about haiku poems, colour poems, and short stories. We also considered the physical landscape of our regions through an artistic lens.
At home, you can talk about the Japanese Haiku, which consists of three lines. The lines have:
- 5 syllables
- 7 syllables
- 5 syllables
Example: A flower blossoms
Against the rage of winter
Promising new hope
You might also like to talk about the difference between a simile and a metaphor. We used these figures of speech to write colour poems.
- Similes are comparisons using "like" or "as"
- Metaphors are comparisons without using "like" or "as"
Simile example: "She is like a ray of sunshine".
Metaphor example: "He is a smart cookie".

Book Club
Students in both classes have been given the task to find a novel they would like to read over the course of about 5-6 weeks. It cannot be a graphic novel, and should be an appropriate reading level for each individual student (challenging enough, but not too easy). They are to find a book at the Learning Commons, bring one from home, the Calgary Public Library, or anywhere else, as long as it is a physical copy.
As soon as everyone has a book, a letter will be sent home with more information about Book Club!

In 5-2, we have finished reading Rule of Three by Eric Walters. For homework over the weekend, students from 5-2 homeroom ONLY have been asked to finish typing up their paragraph response to the questions below, in Google Docs. This will need to be printed and handed in, printing can be done at the school if needed. Our next Read Aloud novel is Peak by Roland Smith.
5-1 is close to finishing Rule of Three!
5-2, no spoilers shhh :)
Have a lovely weekend!
