First Two Months!

Image
This week, we explored alternative forms of energy. 5-1 worked with specialists to build wind turbines and experiment with the most efficient designs. Terms we should know in science include biotic, abiotic, decomposer, producer, consumer and interactions! Please take the time to practice subtracting 4 digits by 4 digit subtraction. Remember to regroup. Daily practice of fact families is needed as we are moving forward with 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication strategies. Take a moment to share our ten-minute group stories and your science organisms.

Reminders: Retakes are Monday Nov 1 is PD Field Trip Forms Due Nov 4. Proud to be Albertan is PAST DUE Current Events Oct 30. Review: adding and subtracting decimals Math:  We are beginning to explore multiplication strategies. Understanding the pattern can be helpful.  Every multiplication has a twin, which may be easier to remember. For example, if you forget 8×2, you might remember 2×8=16. This way, you only have to remember half the table. Other tips we discussed: Math Multiplication: Tricks by Number 2:  add the number to itself (in other words, double it)  Example 2×9 = 9+9 = 18 4:  double, then double again  Example 4×9: double 9 is 18, double 18 is 36 5:  Cut in half, then times 10 Example: 5x6: Cut 6 in half to get 3, then times 10 for 30 Or times 10 then cut in half Example: 5x9: 9 times 10 is 90, then cut in half for 45 Also the last digit goes 5, 0, 5, 0, ... like this: 5, 10, 15, 20, ... 6:...

We are one month away from our Outdoor School Experience and we could not be more excited! We have been having conversations in our classes about the spectacular things we will be up to and learning about at Camp Chief Hector. Forms are going home next week with all of the information ($280/child) This week, in Hums students have been busy with a multitude of different activities. From having a classroom election (5-2, Current Events News activity created by a student), to creating our Alberta Proud Commercial props. Next week, we will be filming our commercials to capture all of the great things our province has to offer. CTF has been an incredible community building experience. 5-1 students have been exploring balance while 5-2 got to check out the foods room. We prepared the dough, and each student made their own pizza. Math: Our focus in math is to develop a greater understanding of place value. We are writing riddles to challenge each other in this area. Science: Each stu...

We are keeping busy in grade 5! Humanities: Next Wednesday, October 9th will be the beginning of our What's Happening in Canada, Current Events presentations! We have a schedule posted on the wall of our class and each student should know their day to present. This is an at-home project, with the final day being Wednesday, December 18th. We have also started a new project in a class called, Alberta Proud Commercials . Students have been put into groups and have begun research about our wonderful province. We will be creating props and students are welcome to start bringing in recyclable materials to class (please be conscious of size, nothing too massive). In science, students have been exploring severe weather and how it impacts the world around us. Visual journal pages to represent student understanding should be completed no later than Friday. The following videos were used to guide our brainstorming and discussions: Thunderstorms- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUN...
Spirit Wear Arrival! If the size the parent ordered does not fit the child, exchanges   may   be possible, depending on the availability of sizes. The parent should email the address on the order form to make arrangements for an exchange. The items need to be unwashed and unworn to be exchanged.

Greetings! It's hard to believe we spend Wednesday morning exploring the Frog pond in T-shirts! Students are asked to complete their wetland visual page assignment for homework if it was not completed in class. Students can use the notes page they created to help them develop their ideas. Some of the things we discovered at the wetlands are highlighted in the photos! In math, we continue to add and subtract numbers with 5-9 digits. I have added a video that shows regrouping for anyone who wishes to review. If you want to practice extra questions with regrouping, try creating a set of addition or subtraction questions. Remember to include regrouping.
